MagSafe or magnetic power bank: how to choose?

A magnetic power bank attaches to the back of the phone and charges it wirelessly, without any cables to plug in. Practical for everyday use, it also has limitations that are good to know before buying.

How does it work?

MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic attachment and wireless charging system. It features notably on iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 (including mini, Plus, Pro and Pro Max versions), but not on the iPhone SE or the iPhone 16e; for your model, check its technical specifications on Apple’s website. “MagSafe compatible” power banks use a magnetic ring that aligns with the iPhone’s, then charges the phone via induction (wireless charging). Most can also charge via cable, more quickly.

Our magnetic power banks

Model Capacity Wireless Cable Ports
Shatel SP-02 10 000 mAh 15 W max 22.5 W (PD 3.0 / QC 3.0) Type-C (input and output), Lightning (input)
SHTEL SP-80 10 000 mAh 15 W max 22.5 W (PD) Bidirectional Type-C
Plustar PW-2007W 10 000 mAh 15 W max 22.5 W (QC 3.0) 4 integrated cables: Type-C, Lightning, USB, Micro-USB

Without magnet but with wireless charging: the Xiaomi Youth Edition 20 000 mAh (wireless up to 10 W).

Important limitations

  • Actual wireless power: the indicated 15 W is the maximum wireless output power of the battery. On compatible iPhones, the wireless charging power depends on the standard and charger used: many certified Qi chargers charge the iPhone up to 7.5 W, while MagSafe or Qi2 compatible models and accessories can allow higher power depending on the device. For the fastest charge, use the cable output (22.5 W on all three models).
  • Android: wireless charging only works if the phone is Qi-compatible. Many Android phones do not have built-in magnets: a magnetic case or ring is then required for the battery to hold.
  • Case: a thick or metallic case can prevent attachment or charging. Prefer a MagSafe-compatible case.
  • Heat: wireless charging is less efficient than a cable and heats up more; this is normal, but avoid leaving it in the sun.

How to choose?

  • iPhone with MagSafe: the three models attach directly; the Shatel SP-02 also recharges via Lightning.
  • Several different phones at home: the Plustar PW-2007W and its 4 integrated cables (Type-C, Lightning, USB, Micro-USB) helps everyone out.
  • To keep the phone in hand: consider the K10b MagSafe holder.

Frequently asked questions

Does my magnetic power bank work with an iPhone 11?

The iPhone 11 does not integrate MagSafe: the battery will not stay on the back of the phone by itself without a magnetic case. Since it is compatible with Qi wireless charging, wireless charging remains possible when the battery is properly positioned.

Can I charge the power bank and the phone at the same time?

Check the model’s datasheet: this function is not indicated for all.
